‘Lucy’s in Disguise’!

June 3, 2011

Hello all! I’m sorry I’ve not been around to peg… but I’m back, a smile on my face & fully inspired by Miss Allen’s new collection- Yes that’s Miss Lily Allen. I always fear that the cross over between celebrities to fashion designer is a cliché, cringing step, border line impossible. A step which cheapens the role of a true designer & solely means cha-ching-money money money… as the zeros are added to the end of the garment’s price tag!! However this particular business partnership has caught my eye, cleverly letting viewers take a peep into the initial development stages with a fly on the wall documentary, From rags to riches.

The entrepreneur, Lily Allen has set up a vintage fashion business with her older sister, Sarah Owen. The documentary showed the frivolities which saw lily’s hard earned cash fluttered by a her sister upon a business trip to LA, it became an intriguing warts & all documentary about how she started this partnership & business …I loved this, to the point where I considered resigning & heading on out there myself without the celebrity-ness attached :)!! It shed light on a singer- showing a soft side & even discussing her tragic miscarriage.
The sisters opened the store ‘Lucy in Disguise’ (great name!) in Covent Garden, allowing customers to buy or hire vintage pieces at affordable prices, the store to my delight also features blow dry salon… (I will see you there!!) Now they have launched their own fashion line under the ‘Lucy In Disguise’ label, an 18 piece vintage inspired- ready-to-wear collection, sold in store, on the Lucy In Disguise website & Harvey Nichols stores from June. (On another note were in June already… how scary is that!)
On the grape vine (A place I spend many a day) I hear the sisters have ushered in a famous face or two to join their fashion line…& wouldn’t you with all of their contacts? Heading the design base was Nadia Jones, creative director of Oasis & Rankin of all people has completed the photographs for their look book!!
I have respect for this fashion line & business, they haven’t tried to initiate a collection which sits closely with the high street or has filtered from the catwalks or is even a trying to be high end label. They have worked with what they love & that’s vintage. They have constructed timeless pieces which span over a multitude of eras, including 60’s inspired maxis with a twist of the 70’s & a dash of 80’s jumpsuits & ra-ra …. I’m nipping down this week!!
Much love pegs xx
